Web Development

Web development is constantly evolving, major shifts this year in web development include accessibility in real time on all devices. Accelerated mobile pages, or AMP, has been steadily increasing in popularity. AMP is an open source project with the goal of improving the performance of web content and advertisement. AMP provides a much better user experience on mobile devices due to its much faster web page load times which leads to increased exposure, visibility in search results, and ultimately more revenue for site owners.

Another noticeable change is the death of Flash; once Google began using HTML5 the death of Flash was sealed. HTML5 is faster and is more user-friendly. By the end of 2020, Adobe will finally pull the plug on Flash and stop updating as well as distributing Flash. Although Flash has been steadily declining for the last several years this marks a big final change in web development.

Search Engine Optimization

As the web continues to rapidly grow and every website fights for user traffic, search engine optimization, or SEO, has become increasingly important in order for sites to increase their exposure and traffic. Search engine optimization can be done in many ways, all of which increase the sites visibility and click-through rates for users. Below are a few important things to consider when performing search engine optimization on any site that can significantly increase the traffic your site receives.

  1.  Understand the importance of thoroughness and keywords in your content. If you are as thorough as possible, meaning if you answer every possible question a user could have about your content, you will appear higher in the search results on search engines like Google or Bing. A good way to examine if you have been thorough enough is to visit your site as a user and attempt to get all the info or perform your sites act as a user. If you have found everything you need and you do not need to leave your site as a user to complete your task you are likely thorough enough on your site. Keywords are often an important part of this process as well, for example; if your site is selling something online, it would be smart to include keywords around people search for when they are looking to buy something online.
  2. Optimize your title tag and meta descriptions. These are the first impressions users have with your site and is one of the largest factors that create traffic for your site. Include keywords in sentences that are easy to read that draws users in. You can think of the title tag as the fishing hook and the description as a lure or bait that draws users into viewing your site.
  3. Utilize Google's tools intended for SEO. Google search console is an extremely useful tool that can give you important analytics including, where the majority of your traffic is coming from and impressions your site receives, meaning who sees your site in search results. This tool can help you to optimize your site in that what gives you the most clicks should be further utilized and what doesn't perform as well needs changing.
